The Puzzling Life of Art Bell (1945-2018)

Now the 'consciousness unit' who was known during his recent earth incarnation as Art Bell—or, more precisely, Arthur Williams Bell III—has access to information sources that are less questionable than those of Earth.  In his later years, the news about some of Art's actions and quandaries was as puzzling as the phenomena that it was his predicament to consider during his radio talkshow interviews of witnesses and experiencers of phenomenal occurrences.  Today I can only wonder about how much of my own case study he'd read.  Apparently what he had read wasn't advantageous for him.  I'm sorry, Art.

My experience of life abruptly changed in August of 1995 and I was always aware that merely a superficial knowledge of my 'case' would be an inadequate means for someone to develop a perspective.  Like some of the transcendental communicators I've studied, I too seemed to be at times trapped in literality while speaking about myself and interacting with people (including the media) who each had their own individual beliefs and understanding of earthly reality.

Because of the nature of the radio program he created, "Coast to Coast AM," many people may not understand that Art was not intent upon exploring all aspects of the paranormal.  For example, while he professed to know about John of God, he dismissed 'channelers' as unworthy of consideration because these cases could be something faked.  In truth and what I discovered during my own investigations, researchers willing to examine the extensive documentation of a channeling case should usually be able to readily determine authenticity (especially with so many YouTube videos being available).  Most of the then-famous psychics and mediums were rarely, if ever, heard as a guest on Art's show.

I admired the occasions when Art confronted guests with challenging questions and was left baffled at the times when he championed certain guests in a way that I thought was unwarranted.  I particularly get aggravated upon hearing guests say things that I know to be blatantly incorrect without any questioning response from the interviewer; however, it seemed that during these instances Art simply didn't know that the guests' conclusions as articulated couldn't have been 'right.'

When I first started listening to Art, it seemed that he was sincerely interested in finding supportable answers concerning 'paranormal phenomena.'  Sometimes during an interview he would become excited when there was a testimonial that was a compelling indication of a transcendental occurrence.  This was obviously interesting for the listening audience and the reason for the seemingly ever-growing popularity of the show.  I began tuning in to Art's late night program after the publication of my case study book Testament in 1997.  I'd learned about Art from a Los Angeles Times profile article.

One of the things I once heard Art say is how 'Every country propagandizes its people.'  I reflected about the basis for such a statement because it showed no consideration of moral or spiritual principles.  Art had enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at a young age and was the son of a Marine colonel father and drill sergeant mother.  The rumors can still be read with a Google search of "Art Bell disinformation."

When Art's wife Ramona telephoned me about the possibility of my being a guest for Art in May 1997 after I'd sent him a copy of the book, she eventually said to me: "I've just reconsidered everything."  (transcript)  She was the producer of his show.

Also in May 1997, Art was proud of being named on the Talker's Magazine list of "The Top 10 Radio Talk Hosts in America" (along with Rush Limbaugh, Dr. Laura Schlessinger and Howard Stern); however, it was a complicated time in Art's life.  The previous April, Art had been identified in what I thought was blatant disinformation in Time magazine as "The Man Who Spread The Myth" in relation to the Chuck Shramek Hale-Bopp comet 'companion' report with this news being implausibly linked to the Heaven's Gate cult suicides.  In comparison, I'd faxed to Art a comment reminding that cult members had published a statement on their website entitled "Our Position Against Suicide."

During the months following my conversation with Ramona, I continued to send Email and fax notes to Art so that he and Ramona might develop a better understanding about myself.  I hoped that he might even be motivated to read Testament.  Today I found some print-outs from this period in a file (shown below) after learning about Art's passing that occurred on Friday the 13th, an ironic date among the superstitious (which Art was himself in some ways).

This photo from Art's website was captioned on August 8, 1997: "Ramona snaps this great photo of lightning striking near Art's broadcast studio, causing the satellite uplink to fail that night.  And as an extra, a rainbow too!  Posted August 7, 1997.  Scanned by Art."

One afternoon when the time seemed right, I decided to call Art as I still had his telephone number from when Ramona had first left a message for me to call her.  After briefly talking to Art, he passed the phone to his wife.  Now I don't remember the conversation with Ramona.  The only thing I recall is being quite surprised the next time I listened to Art's show as he mentioned that he had abruptly disconnected his telephone number that day.  He then asked for the scheduled guest that evening to call him on another line so that Art could conduct the interview.

It was in October 1998 when Art unexpectedly quit the show and mentioned a "threatening terrible event."  A transcript of some of his radio broadcast commentary can still be found online:

You may recall about a year ago . . . I told you that there was an event, a threatening terrible event occurred to my family, which I could not tell you about.  Because of that event, and a succession of other events, what you're listening to right now, is my final broadcast on the air.  This is it folks, I'm going off the air and will not return.  And what I will tell you now is what I told you then.  When the time comes when I can tell you what occurred, I will tell you, through the press, through the media, of one sort or the other.  I will explain to you the entire thing, it's not that I want to hold anything back from my audience, however, for the protection of my family, until it is otherwise revealed, I can't discuss it, I won't discuss it.  And if you were in my position, you would do exactly the same thing.  And when you finally hear whatever it is, what it is, whenever you hear it, I think you will then understand.

At any rate, I wanted to tell you, I didn't want to go without saying a word, so I'm telling you now.  What you are listening to, is my final broadcast.  It's been a good run, and you've been a great audience, and it's been an absolutely incredible forum.  And my presumption is, that the forum will continue.  At any rate, it certainly is my hope, that the forum will continue.

And again when the time comes, when this information can be released, you can be sure that I will release it, and I would assume because of the magnitude of the forum that I have held, at that time, you'll get the whole story.  But the time will come when I will tell it.

So for now and the foreseeable future, that's it!  That is the end of this man's broadcast career.  So, thank you, and goodbye . . .

As with other modes of journalism, being a radio talkshow host is a position of profound social significance and I think Art was cognizant of this.  Another aspect of his position is reflected in some Newsgroup comment print-outs from this period.  Here are two examples of dissatisfaction expressed with the recurring regular guests of Art's show:

The mere fact that THE ART OF DISINFO keeps these charlatans coming back on a regular basis, conclusively proves that Bell has an agenda which has NOTHING to do with truth.  — Terry Shaye 9/28/98

How long can he keep up his facade of lies?  How many times must we hear from bald-faced liars, that when caught, are never dismissed as such?  Art knows these people are con artists and yet they are on his show every month. — Karl Bertarker 9/29/98

In May 1999 Matt Drudge offered an explanation for the basis of Art's drastic behavior at the Drudge Report website with a series of successive headlines on May 28 and 29, 1999.  Here are the two that I printed from the Internet at the time:

During the years following the 1998 resignation, Art made several comebacks as a talkshow host but he just never seemed the same for very long.

I went on to interact with other "Coast to Coast AM" hosts as an occasional caller through 2003.  During an early 2000 call, I complained about Art "covering me up."  (transcriptAs I reflect about these circumstances, it seems obvious that people—including those working in the media under a corporate hierarchymay be afraid of innovative metaphysical data due to perceived consensus beliefs engendering an expectation of disapproval; however, such an expectation is only an inappropriate projection of a fear-based mentality.  Hopefully, as one is mindful that any assumed imperative can readily be relinquished as a 'corporation' or country 'government' has no integral point of view, any corporate executive, employee or government official is free to find creative solutions for accomplishing our fundamental spiritual purpose in life of finding ways to solve social challenges and stop environmental destruction to the Earth ecosystem.

Contemplating my experiences with Art Bell, I can only urge others to carefully reflect about the documentation concerning the actual Source influencing a paranormal experiencer to inform others about what has been learned.

Previous blog articles about "Coast to Coast AM" also include "The Atlantic: 'The Listener'""My Calls to 'Coast to Coast AM' (1999-2003)", "Paranormal Radio Shows in 2013" and "'Coast to Coast AM,' Nostradamus and the Removal of Ignorance, EVP and Auld Lang Syne".

7/23/18 Update: I experienced an encounter with Art in a dream.  He seemed happy to greet me—one might even say he seemed delighted—yet the dream left me with a final puzzling detail as he gave me fifty dollars.  I have no idea what this might represent metaphorically.

8/2/18 Update: The solution to the metaphor now seems clear as it has turned out that I was 'right on the money' in a surprising way.  It was announced late yesterday that Art Bell died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs — "multiple drug intoxication from his own lawfully prescribed prescriptions."  The blog article I was writing at the time of my 'dream' with Art quotes a warning given through transcendental communication about "how dangerous drugs of all kinds can be" along with the statement "Try to warn humanity that they not only alter their present lives on your side but also influence in a negative way their future lives."
